Founder - Jillian Aiken
At Amai Vegan Treats, we believe in high quality desserts that treat your body, soul, and mind. We cut out the junk so you can enjoy your treats without all of the guilt attached. All of our products are made from all natural ingredients (and of course, lots of love!).
We are a family owned, local business that is on a mission to bring people healthier dessert options made from nourishing ingredients. All of this without sacrificing taste or texture.
Our Cococreme coconut milk mousse can be found throughout the Greater Vancouver area in 3 tempting flavours (Chocolate, Salted Vanilla, and Spiced). They are inclusive to a variety of dietary needs as they are free from dairy, gluten, soy, and refined sugar. We like to say they’re pretty ‘AMAI-zing’!
Here's how we got started...
Jillian Aiken, a food lover who has been lactose intolerant for 10 years, began Amai as a passion project while finishing her teaching degree. She would make these treats for friends' birthdays and special events for those who could not eat dairy or animal products. As a consumer, she realized that there were very few inclusive dessert options that had healthy ingredients. Through this realization, she has put her teaching career on hold and now her and her partner, Roman, are committed to creating a line of sweet treats that are 100% cruelty, dairy, gluten, soy, and refined sugar free.
What does 'Amai' mean?
Amai (pronounced AH-MY) is a Japanese word that means 'sweet'.
The name was chosen as an homage to our founder's Japanese heritage.
Not to mention it sounds pretty cute!
We used to have compostable packaging... Why the change?
When Cococreme first launched, an extra effort was made to be a conscious company. That involved using fully compostable packaging and labels.
As time progressed and Cococreme entered more retailers, we realized that too much air was permeating through the cups which was ultimately affecting the shelf life. We tried sealing the cups, but that proved to be ineffective. Being firmly against adding preservatives into our products, we had to find another way to naturally extend the shelf life.
We came to the tough conclusion that we needed to change our packaging :( ...
The first priority was better shelf life.
By changing over to our new fully recyclable, tamper-proof packaging, we were able to naturally extend the shelf life by 4 days by letting less air through. The new packaging is sturdier so it can withstand freezing, as well as shipping. Cococreme can be frozen for 2 months and defrosts well, maintaining it's creamy texture.
We thought about using glass jars, but the cost of the product would have been too expensive for our customers. We had to be considerate of this.
We chose to use a cardboard sleeve and a plastic cup as both can be easily recycled anywhere.
We came to the understanding that the PLA (corn-fibre) packaging we were using before was constantly being thrown in the trash anyways as many composting programs do not accept them in home compost bins.
We hope this gives you a better understanding of why we made the switch. We can assure you that it was not an easy decision as our hearts would prefer to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
